Fc receptors (FcRs) are cell surface proteins found on phagocytic cells like macrophages and neutrophils. These receptors bind to the Fc region of antibodies attached to pathogens, linking humoral and cellular immunity. This interaction triggers phagocytosis and other effector functions, leading to the destruction of antibody-coated targets. Different classes of FcRs exist, including FcγRs (binding IgG), FcαRI (binding IgA), and FcεRI (binding IgE), each mediating distinct immune responses. Signaling occurs through ITAM or ITIM motifs, providing a balance between activation and inhibition to prevent autoimmunity and excessive inflammation.
