Overview

Fecal hemoglobin refers to the presence and concentration of hemoglobin found in stool samples, detected primarily through fecal occult blood tests (FOBT) or fecal immunochemical tests (FIT). It is used as a diagnostic biomarker for gastrointestinal bleeding, most notably in population screening for colorectal cancer, but may also indicate other GI conditions such as polyps, hemorrhoids, diverticulosis, and ulcerative colitis[4][5][6][3]. Quantification of fecal hemoglobin is correlated with risk of advanced neoplasia and colorectal cancer and is utilized to stratify patients for further investigation, typically via colonoscopy[2][5][1]. It is *not* a cellular protein target and does not participate directly in biological regulatory pathways.
