Overview

Feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) antigen refers to the structural and functional proteins of the FIV lentivirus, a member of the Retroviridae family that causes an immunodeficiency syndrome in domestic cats (Merck Veterinary Manual, 2023). The primary antigens include the p24 capsid protein, which is the most common target for diagnostic assays, and the gp120 envelope glycoprotein, which mediates viral entry by binding to host receptors like CD134 and CXCR4 (UniProt P16088). Additionally, the viral genome encodes essential enzymes such as reverse transcriptase, protease, and integrase, which are critical for the viral replication cycle (NCBI Genome, 2024). These proteins serve as therapeutic targets for antiretroviral drugs, such as zidovudine (AZT), which inhibits the reverse transcriptase enzyme to reduce viral replication and improve clinical outcomes in infected cats (PubMed, PMID: 21147471). While these antigens are vital for vaccine development and diagnostic monitoring, therapeutic challenges include the rapid mutation of the virus leading to drug resistance and the potential for hematologic toxicity in the host (AVMA, 2024).
