Feline panleukopenia virus (FPV) is a small (~20 nm), non-enveloped, single-stranded DNA virus of the Parvoviridae family that infects domestic and wild cats. FPV specifically targets rapidly dividing cells in the intestine, bone marrow, and embryonic tissues, causing destruction of white blood cells (panleukopenia), profound immune suppression, and acute gastroenteritis. The principal capsid protein, VP2, determines host range and is the main antibody target for vaccines. FPV is particularly deadly for unvaccinated kittens; the virus is highly resistant in the environment and can survive for extended periods, making outbreaks challenging to control. Current preventive measures focus on vaccination rather than direct antiviral therapy.
Vaccines induce neutralizing antibodies against the VP2 capsid protein, thereby preventing infection. No direct antivirals in clinical use.
