Fer-1-like protein 6 (FER1L6) is a member of the ferlin family, a group of large calcium-binding, membrane-associated proteins. FER1L6 plays an essential role in the development and maturation of striated muscle tissue and is important for muscle cell proliferation and differentiation[1][2]. Loss of FER1L6 expression in animal models, such as zebrafish, leads to muscle defects, cardiac developmental abnormalities, and phenotypes resembling congenital myopathies. FER1L6 operates as a calcium-binding protein involved in membrane trafficking, with colocalization observed with syntaxin 4 and vinculin, and its function is not redundant with other ferlin family members[1][2]. While well-conserved between zebrafish and human proteins, its precise functional roles in humans remain to be fully characterized. There are no known therapeutic agents or drugs directly targeting FER1L6, and currently, it is not considered a classic therapeutic target (e.g., receptor, enzyme, transporter)[1][2].
