Fermitin family member 3 pseudogene

Molecular classification
Processed Pseudogene

Overview

The fermitin family member 3 pseudogene (ENSG00000266691), also named LOC100421165, is a nonfunctional genomic sequence in the human genome. It shares sequence similarity with the functional fermitin family member 3 gene (FERMT3), but due to mutations such as frameshifts, insertions, deletions, or premature stop codons, it does not produce a functional protein[1][5]. Like most processed pseudogenes, it likely arose by retrotransposition of mRNA, resulting in a DNA sequence lacking introns and regulatory elements typical of functional genes[2][4][5]. Pseudogenes generally have no biological or therapeutic function, though in rare cases, some may exert regulatory effects via non-coding RNAs; this is not substantiated for this locus[5][1].
