Target intelligence / Profile preview
Ferriprotoporphyrin IX is the iron(III) complex of protoporphyrin IX, commonly referred to as heme B. It serves as a prosthetic group for hemoproteins and accumulates as a toxic byproduct during hemoglobin digestion in malaria parasites, making it a drug target for antimalarials. Antimalarial drugs such as chloroquine act by binding ferriprotoporphyrin IX and inhibiting its conversion into non-toxic hemozoin crystals within Plasmodium parasites. This leads to accumulation of toxic free heme species that damage parasite membranes via oxidative stress
