Ferritin heavy chain 1 pseudogene 1 (FTH1P1)

FTH1P1
Molecular classification
Other (Processed pseudogene, non-coding RNA)

Overview

FTH1P1 is a processed pseudogene derived from the ferritin heavy chain gene (FTH1) family. Unlike the parental FTH1 gene, which codes for the heavy subunit of ferritin and plays a crucial role in intracellular iron storage and iron metabolism, FTH1P1 has lost protein-coding capacity. Instead, FTH1P1 and several related FTH1 pseudogenes are proposed to act as non-coding RNAs that can regulate the expression of their parental gene (FTH1) by acting as competitive endogenous RNAs (ceRNAs), sponging shared microRNAs and thereby influencing the availability of FTH1 transcripts for translation. This regulatory network may have implications in diseases such as cancer, particularly where iron homeostasis and oxidative stress are relevant, but FTH1P1 does not have direct functional or therapeutic relevance as a targetable molecule[2][4].
