Overview

Ferritin heavy chain 1 pseudogene 11 (FTH1P11) is a processed pseudogene of the ferritin heavy chain 1 (FTH1) gene family in humans[3][4][6]. Unlike the functional FTH1 gene, which encodes a critical subunit of the iron storage protein ferritin, FTH1P11 does not produce a functional protein and is considered non-coding[6]. Recent research has shown that FTH1P11 and other ferritin-related pseudogenes play regulatory roles at the RNA level, particularly in cancer biology. FTH1P11 acts as a competitive endogenous RNA (ceRNA), binding and sequestering specific microRNAs (e.g., miR-638, miR-19b, miR-181a, miR-210, miR-362, miR-616) that target the parental FTH1 mRNA[6][4]. By modulating the availability of these microRNAs, FTH1P1P11 indirectly regulates FTH1 expression and iron homeostasis, impacting processes such as cell proliferation and tumor suppression in prostate cancer. FTH1P11 itself does not encode a receptor, enzyme, or other therapeutic target, and there are no direct interacting drugs or described adverse safety concerns related to this pseudogene[6][4]. FTH1P11 illustrates how non-coding pseudogenes may have important biological functions through RNA-mediated regulatory networks, especially in contexts such as cancer where the balance of gene expression and iron metabolism is critical[6][4].
