Overview

FTH1P13 (Ferritin heavy chain 1 pseudogene 13) is a member of the ferritin heavy chain pseudogene family. Unlike the protein-coding FTH1 gene, which encodes the heavy subunit of ferritin responsible for intracellular iron storage, FTH1P13 is a non-protein-coding pseudogene. It is transcriptionally active in a variety of tissues and is believed to participate in the post-transcriptional regulation of ferritin genes through interactions with microRNAs, functioning as a competing endogenous RNA (ceRNA). Although it is not considered a direct therapeutic target, emerging studies suggest FTH1P13 and related pseudogenes may influence cancer cell gene expression or differentiation by modulating the levels of regulatory RNAs, but their molecular mechanisms and clinical significance remain under investigation. Key distinctions: FTH1P13 is not a receptor, enzyme, or classic drug target, but a regulatory pseudogene with possible gene expression–modulating functions in certain biological contexts such as cancer.
