Overview

Ferritin heavy chain 1 pseudogene 16 (FTH1P16) is a processed pseudogene related to the ferritin heavy chain 1 (FTH1) gene. Unlike the parental FTH1 gene, which encodes the heavy chain subunit of ferritin, FTH1P16 does not produce a functional ferritin protein[4][7]. Instead, it is transcriptionally active and acts primarily through non-coding RNA functions. FTH1P16 serves as a competing endogenous RNA (ceRNA), modulating the expression of FTH1 by acting as a molecular decoy for microRNAs that target FTH1. This ceRNA activity supports the regulation of iron storage protein levels and impacts cellular iron homeostasis. FTH1P16 and related pseudogenes are implicated in cancer biology, notably as tumor suppressors in prostate cancer via disruption of microRNA-mediated repression of FTH1, thus indirectly affecting iron metabolism and tumor growth[4][7]. As a pseudogene without protein-coding function, it is not considered a direct therapeutic target, and there are no known drugs interacting with FTH1P16.
