Overview

Ferritin heavy chain 1 pseudogene 21 (FTH1P21) is a processed pseudogene mapped to chromosome 4q32.1 in humans. It shares substantial sequence similarity with the active FTH1 gene but lacks protein-coding ability and is usually classified as an inferred, nonfunctional locus. Recent research suggests that pseudogenes in the FTH1 family may have regulatory functions in gene expression, such as acting as competitive endogenous RNAs (ceRNAs) or influencing iron homeostasis, and that some may impact disease processes like cancer by acting as miRNA sponges or generating regulatory RNAs. FTH1P21 itself has not been directly implicated in encoding functional protein or as a validated disease biomarker or drug target.

FTH1P21
02

Mechanism of action

Not applicable—pseudogene does not encode functional protein. Some literature discusses ceRNA/miRNA sponging effects relevant for regulation of the parental gene (FTH1), but not as a drug target

03

Biological functions

Regulatory RNA function (competing for miRNA binding, potential involvement as a competing endogenous RNA, ceRNA, lncRNA)
04

Disease associations

Cancer (pseudogenes in the FTH1 family have been associated with regulatory effects relevant to cancer)Other (Potential roles in iron metabolism regulation via interactions with miRNA and competitive endogenous RNA networks)
05

Safety considerations

None directly related to the pseudogene itself. Safety concerns pertain to iron homeostasis and disease processes relevant to the parental FTH1, not FTH1P21
06

Biomarkers

None established for patient selection or efficacy monitoring specific to FTH1P21. Parental FTH1 protein/family may be relevant in iron-related disorders and cancer
