Overview

Ferritin heavy chain 1 pseudogene 22 (FTH1P22) is a pseudogene of the ferritin heavy chain gene family. Unlike the canonical ferritin heavy chain 1 gene (FTH1), it does not encode a functional protein. Pseudogenes like FTH1P22 may function as regulatory elements in gene expression, acting through RNA-mediated mechanisms such as competing endogenous RNA (ceRNA) or serving as sources for small interfering RNAs (siRNAs) that influence the expression of their parental gene. Although such pseudogenes have historically been considered non-functional, recent evidence indicates that some can regulate biological processes, including those relevant in cancer and cell metabolism, by interacting with the regulatory networks of their functional gene family members[3]. FTH1P22 itself has no known direct therapeutic, enzymatic, or receptor function and is not considered a therapeutic target.
