Overview

Ferritin heavy chain 1 pseudogene 25 (FTH1P25) is a non-coding processed pseudogene belonging to the ferritin family, which also includes the coding genes FTH1 (ferritin heavy chain) and FTL (ferritin light chain). Pseudogenes like FTH1P25 lack the ability to produce a functional protein, but recent research suggests pseudogenes in the ferritin family may participate in the regulation of gene expression, particularly through interactions with microRNAs and as components of ceRNA networks. While ferritin proteins are crucial for intracellular iron storage and homeostasis, their pseudogenes may influence biological outcomes such as cell proliferation, survival, metastasis, and potentially drug resistance by affecting the availability or stability of parental ferritin gene transcripts, especially in contexts involving cancer and alterations of iron balance. FTH1P25 is not currently recognized as a therapeutic target, receptor, or biomarker, and there are no drugs known to act directly on it[4][2].

Biological functions

Potential regulation of parental *FTH1* gene expression through mechanisms such as ceRNA (competing endogenous RNA) networks, miRNA spongingpossibly involved indirectly in cellular iron homeostasis and related regulatory pathways

Disease associations

Other (currently no direct evidence of FTH1P25’s involvement in specific diseases, but *ferritin* family pseudogenes may play regulatory roles in processes such as cancer by modulating expression of functional ferritin genes)
