Overview

Ferritin heavy chain 1 pseudogene 27 (FTH1P27) is an annotated processed pseudogene derived from the FTH1 (ferritin heavy chain 1) gene family. FTH1 encodes the heavy subunit of ferritin, the major intracellular iron storage protein with ferroxidase activity, crucial for iron homeostasis. Pseudogenes such as FTH1P27 do not encode a functional protein, and for FTH1P27 specifically, there is no evidence of protein product or direct biological function. FTH1 pseudogenes can transcribe long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) that may participate in cellular regulation, sometimes acting as competitive endogenous RNAs (ceRNAs) to modulate the availability of microRNAs that normally regulate their parental gene, but FTH1P27 has not been specifically implicated in such roles. According to curated pseudogene databases, FTH1P27’s sequence is highly homologous to FTH1 but does not produce functional protein, and is generally not considered a therapeutic target nor relevant to drug development or clinical biomarker panels. FTH1P27 is a processed pseudogene, not a protein-coding gene, and is not considered a classical molecular target (such as a receptor, enzyme, transporter, etc.). According to reference tables, FTH1P27—despite its name—is actually annotated as a pseudogene of FTHL17 and not of FTH1, suggesting a potential mislabeling or confusion in the genomic annotation literature. There are multiple FTH1 pseudogenes (over 24 annotated), but the most cited in the literature for regulatory or disease relevance include FTH1P3, FTH1P2, FTH1P8, FTH1P11, and FTH1P16; FTH1P27 is not among these key functional candidates. In summary, FTH1P27 is a noncoding processed pseudogene closely related to ferritin genes, not a therapeutic or diagnostic target, and is generally considered functionally inert and not relevant for drug interaction, mechanism of action, or clinical safety concerns. Its annotation and functional relevance are minimal, and there is an additional annotation concern because it may be misclassified in databases as a pseudogene of a different ferritin gene.
