Overview

Ferritin heavy chain 1 pseudogene 28 (FTH1P28) is a processed pseudogene of the ferritin heavy chain 1 (FTH1) gene family. Pseudogenes are genomic sequences similar to known genes but are typically considered nonfunctional due to mutations or lack of regulatory elements necessary for protein expression. FTH1P28 is one of many ferritin pseudogenes widely distributed in the human genome and does not encode a functional protein. Recent evidence suggests some ferritin pseudogenes can be transcribed and may regulate their parental gene expression through competing endogenous RNA (ceRNA) mechanisms, but no evidence exists for FTH1P28 itself being transcribed or having a direct biological function or disease relevance[2][3][4]. It is not considered a therapeutic target, nor is it known to interact with drugs or serve as a disease biomarker. Its only known feature is homology and sequence similarity to the functional FTH1 gene, which encodes a subunit of the cellular iron storage protein ferritin[3][1]. The listing of this pseudogene as a therapeutic target is likely due to a database or annotation error.
