Ferritin heavy chain 1 pseudogene 3 (FTH1P3) is an intronless pseudogene of the ferritin heavy chain 1 (FTH1) gene, located on human chromosome 2p23.3 and transcribed into a long non-coding RNA (lncRNA). The transcript contains early stop codons and does not encode a functional protein but is widely and robustly expressed in many human tissues and cell lines, much like its parental gene. FTH1P3 acts via ceRNA mechanisms by sponging microRNAs that modulate its parent FTH1 and related ferritin gene expression. Overexpression and regulatory activities of FTH1P3 have been implicated in the progression of several cancers, possibly by influencing cellular iron homeostasis, proliferation, migration, invasion, epithelial-mesenchymal transition, and drug resistance.
