Overview

Ferritin heavy chain 1 pseudogene 4 (FTH1P4) is a processed pseudogene derived from the ferritin heavy chain 1 (FTH1) gene[4][5]. Unlike the parental FTH1 gene, which encodes the major subunit of the intracellular iron storage protein ferritin, FTH1P4 does not code for a functional protein. Recent research suggests that some ferritin pseudogenes may have regulatory roles by acting as competing endogenous RNAs (ceRNAs) through sequestration of microRNAs, thereby influencing the expression of their parental genes and participating in complex gene regulatory networks, particularly in cancers such as prostate cancer[2][5]. There is no evidence that FTH1P4 codes for a therapeutic target such as a receptor, enzyme, or transporter, nor is it a direct drug target; its biological relevance would be indirect, through gene expression regulation or potential ceRNA function. FTH1P4 is best classified as a pseudogene, and referential information about ferritin pseudogenes should be interpreted with caution as their direct relevance remains under active investigation[4][5].

Mechanism of action

Not applicable (no drugs directly target the pseudogene; any effect is indirect via gene regulation)

03

Biological functions

Competing endogenous RNA (ceRNA) for microRNAsRegulation of gene expression by acting as microRNA spongesOther (not a direct enzymatic, receptor, or transporter function)
04

Disease associations

Cancer (some FTH1 pseudogenes implicated in cancer regulation as ceRNAs, including in prostate cancer)Possibly other disease roles via gene regulation, but not as a therapeutic target
05

Biomarkers

Some FTH1 pseudogenes may serve as surrogate markers of altered microRNA regulatory networks in cancer, but FTH1P4 specifically is not established as a biomarker
