Overview

Ferritin heavy chain 1 pseudogene 5 (FTH1P5) is a processed pseudogene belonging to the ferritin gene family, which includes multiple functional genes and numerous related pseudogenes[1][2]. Pseudogenes like FTH1P5 do not code for functional proteins due to mutations or the absence of regulatory elements necessary for transcription/translation. However, recent evidence suggests that some ferritin pseudogenes may modulate gene expression of their parental genes (like FTH1), for example by acting as competing endogenous RNAs (ceRNAs), sequestering microRNAs that also target the canonical FTH1 gene, thereby potentially influencing iron metabolism and cancer biology[2][7]. At present, FTH1P5 itself is not considered a direct therapeutic target such as a receptor or enzyme, but pseudogenes in the ferritin family may play indirect regulatory roles in biological processes, particularly those connected to cancer and iron homeostasis[2][7]. There are no known drugs, direct mechanisms of action, biomarkers, or safety concerns specifically associated with FTH1P5.
