Ferritin heavy chain 1 pseudogene 8 (FTH1P8) is a human processed pseudogene related to the ferritin heavy chain 1 (FTH1) gene, part of a large family of iron metabolism-related genes and pseudogenes. Unlike protein-coding ferritin genes, FTH1P8 does not code for a functional protein, but contributes to complex post-transcriptional regulation networks, especially through competing endogenous RNA (ceRNA) relationships. FTH1P8 and similar pseudogenes act as miRNA sponges, sequestering microRNAs that would otherwise repress the expression of their parental gene, FTH1, which is crucial for cellular iron storage and homeostasis. Recent research implicates FTH1P8 and its network in the regulation of cellular iron balance, tumor suppression, and cancer cell metabolism, although its biological roles remain incompletely characterized. FTH1P8 is not a traditional therapeutic target, but may have emerging roles as a regulatory RNA in disease, particularly cancer.
