Overview

Ferritin heavy chain 1 pseudogene 9 (FTH1P9) is a processed pseudogene belonging to the ferritin gene family, which contains more than 40 annotated pseudogenes distributed throughout the human genome[4][7]. Unlike functional ferritin subunits, FTH1P9 does not encode an iron-binding protein and is not known to produce a translated product[7]. Recent genomic studies indicate that certain ferritin pseudogenes—including other members such as FTH1P3—can be transcribed and participate in non-coding RNA networks that regulate parental gene expression by acting as microRNA sponges or sources of regulatory RNAs[4][6][7]. However, there is currently no definitive evidence that FTH1P9 has any transcriptional activity or direct biological function; it is primarily regarded as a relic of the genomic duplication and retrotransposition events that created the complex ferritin pseudogene family[4][7][6]. FTH1P9, therefore, is not considered a therapeutic target, enzyme, receptor, or disease-associated protein, and there are no known drugs, mechanisms of action, or biomarker roles linked to it. It should not be confused with the canonical ferritin heavy chain 1 (FTH1), which is essential for iron storage and antioxidant defense[1][3][5].
