Target intelligence / Profile preview

Ferritin Heavy Chain Like 17 (FTHL17)

Target
FTHL17
Molecular classification
Other (Ferritin-like protein; not a classic therapeutic protein class such as receptor, transporter, etc.), Iron-binding protein (but lacks classical ferroxidase activity), Pseudogene (in some contexts, as there are many pseudogenes in the ferritin gene family, but FTHL17 itself is a protein-coding gene)
01

Overview

Ferritin Heavy Chain Like 17 (FTHL17) is a protein-coding gene on the X chromosome encoding a ferritin heavy chain-like protein. Unlike canonical ferritin, FTHL17 protein lacks ferroxidase activity and exhibits partial nuclear localization. Primarily expressed in embryonic germ cells and some tumor types, FTHL17 has been postulated to play regulatory roles in cell differentiation and possibly gene expression networks. Multiple related pseudogenes exist, but "ferritin light chain pseudogene 17" is not an established or annotated entity in gene databases, and FTHL17 itself is distinct from ferritin light chain (FTL) and their corresponding pseudogenes.

Other names

02

Mechanism of action

Not applicable, as there are no drugs targeting FTHL17, and its functional role is poorly defined

03

Biological functions

Partial iron bindingPotential regulatory function in embryonic cell differentiationNot involved in canonical iron storage or ferroxidase activity
04

Disease associations

Friedreich Ataxia 2 (association in database annotation; no direct causal role)Cardiomyopathy (association reported; mechanistic details unclear)Cancer (upregulated in certain tumor cells; possible regulatory roles)
