Ferroptosis is a regulated, non-apoptotic form of cell death characterized by the iron-dependent accumulation of lipid peroxides to lethal levels. Stimulation of the pathway involves inhibiting GPX4 or System Xc− function, increasing intracellular free iron, or enhancing enzymes involved in PUFA oxidation. This pathway is implicated in cancer biology, neurodegeneration, and cardiovascular diseases due to its association with oxidative stress and cell death.
