Overview

Fertilized egg implantation rate is a physiological outcome and clinical metric rather than a discrete molecular target, such as a receptor or enzyme (National Institutes of Health [NIH], 2023). It is defined as the percentage of embryos that successfully undergo nidation into the uterine endometrial lining relative to the total number of embryos transferred during assisted reproductive technology (ART) or produced naturally (Mayo Clinic, 2024). This rate serves as a primary efficacy endpoint for evaluating fertility treatments and the success of Invitro fertilization (IVF) procedures. The process of implantation is governed by a complex synchronization between a high-quality blastocyst and a receptive endometrium during the 'window of implantation' (StatPearls, 2023). While not a druggable molecule itself, various medications like progesterone and human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) are administered to optimize the biological conditions necessary to maximize this rate (Nature Reviews Endocrinology, 2021). Factors such as maternal age, uterine health, and embryonic chromosomal integrity are major determinants of successful implantation (PubMed, 2022).

Mechanism of action

Pharmacological interventions aim to increase this rate by modulating molecular targets such as the progesterone receptor to enhance endometrial receptivity, or by stimulating the LH/hCG receptor to support the luteal phase and early pregnancy maintenance (StatPearls, 2023).
