Festuca pratensis pollen allergen refers to a group of proteins found in the pollen of Meadow Fescue, a common perennial grass in the Poaceae family. These allergens, such as Fes p 1 and Fes p 5, are potent triggers of Type I hypersensitivity reactions in sensitized individuals (WHO/IUIS Allergen Nomenclature, 2024). Upon inhalation, these proteins cross-link allergen-specific IgE antibodies bound to mast cells and basophils, leading to the degranulation and release of inflammatory mediators like histamine (UniProt, P43177). This process results in clinical manifestations such as allergic rhinitis, conjunctivitis, and bronchial asthma (World Allergy Organization, 2023). In the context of clinical pharmacology, these allergens are the primary active ingredients in allergen-specific immunotherapy (AIT) products. AIT aims to modify the disease course by inducing peripheral immune tolerance, which involves the expansion of regulatory T cells and the production of IgG4 blocking antibodies that prevent IgE-mediated allergic cascades (PubMed, PMID: 31034515). This therapeutic approach shifts the immune response from a Th2-dominated profile to a Th1-dominated profile, providing long-term relief from symptoms (Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, 2020). Safety concerns during treatment include the risk of local or systemic allergic reactions, including rare instances of anaphylaxis.
