FGF12 antisense RNA 1 (FGF12-AS1) is a long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) that is transcribed from the antisense strand of the Fibroblast Growth Factor 12 (FGF12) gene. It is widely recognized for its critical roles in regulating gene expression at the post-transcriptional level, predominantly by functioning as a competing endogenous RNA (ceRNA) or 'miRNA sponge'. FGF12-AS1's aberrant expression has been frequently observed in a variety of human cancers, including gastric cancer, hepatocellular carcinoma, colorectal cancer, non-small cell lung cancer, breast cancer, and osteosarcoma. In these contexts, FGF12-AS1 often acts as an oncogene, promoting malignant phenotypes such as increased cell proliferation, migration, invasion, and inhibition of apoptosis, by sponging specific microRNAs and subsequently upregulating oncogenic target genes. Its dysregulation is often correlated with tumor initiation, progression, metastasis, and unfavorable patient outcomes, suggesting its potential as a prognostic or diagnostic biomarker, though it is not considered a direct therapeutic target.
