FGGY carbohydrate kinase domain-containing protein (FGGY)

Target
FGGY
Molecular classification
Enzyme (kinase), Carbohydrate kinase family
01

Overview

FGGY carbohydrate kinase domain-containing protein is an enzyme that belongs to the carbohydrate kinase family. It catalyzes ATP-dependent phosphorylation of D-ribulose at the C-5 position, forming D-ribulose 5-phosphate. The protein may function in metabolite repair mechanisms and the metabolism of alternative carbohydrates. In mammals, multiple isoforms are expressed, notably in skeletal muscle where expression is induced by muscle denervation and during myoblast differentiation. Overexpression in muscle cells inhibits muscle differentiation and attenuates MAP kinase and Akt signaling. While implicated in processes related to muscle atrophy, FGGY has not been clearly established as a direct therapeutic target or as having strong disease associations to date.
