Target intelligence / Profile preview
Fibrin is an insoluble, fibrous protein derived from fibrinogen by the action of thrombin during the coagulation cascade, critically involved in forming stable blood clots at sites of vascular injury[4][5][2][1]. When a vessel wall is damaged, platelets adhere to the exposed collagen, become activated, and form a platelet plug. Coagulation factors then convert fibrinogen to fibrin, which polymerizes into strands that reinforce the platelet plug and seal the wound[1][2][3][4][6]. Fibrin serves as the scaffold for tissue repair and is ultimately removed by fibrinolysis[4][1][3]. Dysfunction in fibrin formation leads to bleeding disorders or pathological thrombosis. For structured databasing, "Fibrin formation in damaged vessel wall" should be entered as a process or pathway, with molecular targets being Fibrin, Fibrinogen, or enzymes of the coagulation cascade (e.g., Thrombin). The process itself is not a druggable molecular target; molecules and enzymes in the cascade are appropriate entries.
Inhibition of thrombin (prevents conversion of fibrinogen to fibrin) Enhancement of plasminogen activation (fibrinolysis; dissolves fibrin clots) Inhibition of platelet function (reduces aggregation, limits plug formation)
