Overview

"Fibrin degradation" refers to the enzymatic process by which the insoluble protein fibrin, the structural framework of a blood clot, is broken down primarily by plasmin, an activated serine protease. This process, known as fibrinolysis, plays a crucial role in maintaining vascular patency, tissue remodeling, and resolving blood clots after vessel injury or thrombosis[1][3]. The breakdown of fibrin releases soluble fragments including D-dimer and other fibrin degradation products, which serve as biomarkers in clinical diagnostics for thrombotic or bleeding conditions. Drugs such as tissue plasminogen activator (alteplase) and urokinase accelerate fibrin degradation by enhancing plasmin formation. Dysregulation of fibrin degradation can contribute to both abnormal clot persistence and excessive bleeding[1][3].
