Overview

Fibrinogen is a key plasma glycoprotein involved in blood clotting and hemostasis. It is the soluble precursor to insoluble fibrin, which forms the structural basis of blood clots. Beyond coagulation, fibrinogen contributes to thrombosis, inflammation, wound healing, and host defense mechanisms. It is a large hexameric glycoprotein composed of two sets of three polypeptide chains: Aα, Bβ, and γ. It is synthesized primarily in hepatocytes.
