The fibrinogen alpha chain is a protein encoded by the FGA gene in humans and is a component of fibrinogen. Upon vascular injury, thrombin cleaves fibrinogen to form insoluble fibrin, which polymerizes to create the structural framework for blood clots. Mutations or deficiencies can result in various bleeding or clotting disorders. It also interacts with tissue plasminogen activator, which is important for clot breakdown.
