The fibrinogen gamma chain is one of the three polypeptide chains (alpha, beta, and gamma) that constitute fibrinogen, a crucial blood-borne glycoprotein involved in hemostasis. Encoded by the FGG gene, the gamma chain plays a vital role in blood clot formation by mediating platelet binding and Factor XIIIa cross-linking. Alternative splicing produces γA and γ' isoforms, with their relative levels influencing cardiovascular disease risk. Mutations in the FGG gene can lead to dysfibrinogenemia, hypofibrinogenemia, and thrombophilia.
