Fibrinogen polymerization refers to the process by which soluble fibrinogen, a plasma glycoprotein, is converted into insoluble fibrin strands during blood clot formation. This transformation is central to hemostasis and wound healing. It is initiated by thrombin which cleaves fibrinopeptides from fibrinogen, converting it to fibrin monomers that spontaneously associate. Protofibrils form, laterally aggregate, and are cross-linked by Factor XIIIa to form a stable fibrin network.
