The fibrinogen receptor, also known as glycoprotein IIb/IIIa (GPIIb/IIIa) or integrin αIIbβ3, is the most abundant integrin on the surface of platelets. It plays a central role in hemostasis by mediating platelet aggregation through its ability to bind fibrinogen and other adhesive proteins. This receptor is a calcium-dependent heterodimer composed of two subunits: GPIIb (integrin αIIb) and GPIIIa (integrin β3). Abnormalities in this receptor's function lead to major bleeding disorders such as Glanzmann's thrombasthenia, while excessive activity contributes to pathological thrombosis, making it a critical target for antithrombotic therapies.
