A fibroblast is a type of biological cell found in connective tissue. It is typically spindle-shaped and is the most abundant cell type within the stroma. Fibroblasts are responsible for synthesizing and maintaining the extracellular matrix (ECM), particularly collagen, elastin, proteoglycans, fibronectin, laminins, and other ECM proteins. This structural framework supports animal tissues and plays a critical role in wound healing. They also interact with neighboring cells via cytokines, growth factors and metabolites influencing immune responses and regulating cellular environments.
