Fibroblast Growth Factor 19 (FGF19) is an endocrine hormone primarily produced in the ileum in response to bile acid absorption. It regulates bile acid synthesis, glucose metabolism, lipid metabolism, and energy homeostasis. FGF19 acts mainly on hepatocytes in the liver via FGFR4 and β-Klotho, leading to downregulation of CYP7A1 and decreased bile acid synthesis. It also influences cell survival/proliferation and bone mineralization. Dysregulation of FGF19 is implicated in diseases such as chronic bile acid diarrhea, metabolic disorders, liver disease, and HCC. The mouse ortholog is FGF15.
