Basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF)

Target
bFGF
Molecular classification
Fibroblast Growth Factor family, Growth Factor
01

Overview

Basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF), also known as FGF2, is a member of the fibroblast growth factor (FGF) family. It is a potent mitogenic and cell survival factor involved in various biological processes including embryonic development, cell proliferation, differentiation, migration, morphogenesis, tissue repair/regeneration, tumor growth/invasion, and angiogenesis. It binds to FGFRs, activating downstream signaling pathways.

Mechanism of action

bFGF exerts its effects by binding to specific fibroblast growth factor receptors (FGFRs), which are tyrosine kinase receptors. Binding activates several intracellular signaling pathways: RAS/MAPK, PI3K/AKT, PLCγ, STAT pathways.
