Overview

Fibroblast growth factor 9 (FGF9) is a secreted, heparin-binding growth factor belonging to the FGF family. It possesses broad mitogenic and cell survival activities, is a key regulator of embryonic development (including sex, lung, and skeletal patterning), tissue repair, cell proliferation, migration, and morphogenesis, and is especially important in glial cell development. FGF9 is produced by neurons and activated hepatic stellate cells and exerts its biological effects primarily through binding to and activating fibroblast growth factor receptors (FGFRs). Dysregulation of FGF9 is linked to cancer progression (notably hepatocellular carcinoma), resistance to cancer therapies, and disorders such as schizophrenia, where it has potential utility as a biomarker for diagnosis and monitoring
