Fibroblasts

Molecular classification
Mesenchymal cell
01

Overview

Fibroblasts are mesenchymal cells responsible for producing extracellular matrix (ECM) proteins, including collagens. In the pleura, they play a key role in tissue repair and fibrosis. Upon injury or inflammation, they are activated by growth factors like TGF-β1 to proliferate and synthesize collagen, especially type I. Excessive activation leads to pleural thickening and impaired gas exchange. Myofibroblasts are an activated form of fibroblasts with enhanced contractility and synthetic activity.
