Fibronectin binding protein A is a cell wall–anchored adhesin found on the surface of Staphylococcus aureus and other bacteria. It binds to fibronectin in the extracellular matrix of host tissues, facilitating strong attachment and invasion into various mammalian cells. This interaction enables S. aureus to adhere efficiently to osteoblasts and other cell types, contributing significantly to its pathogenicity in diseases such as osteomyelitis. The protein contains multiple fibronectin-binding domains that interact with distinct modules within the fibronectin molecule through mechanisms such as tandem β-zippers[1][2]. Besides promoting cellular invasion, FnBPA plays an essential role in biofilm formation by community-associated methicillin-resistant S. aureus strains[2]. Its function makes it a key virulence factor but also presents challenges for therapeutic intervention due to its critical role in infection establishment and persistence.
