Overview

Fibronectin type III and ankyrin repeat domains 1 (FANK1) is a nuclear protein containing an N-terminal fibronectin type III domain and five C-terminal ankyrin repeats[3][4][5][6]. It is highly conserved across vertebrates and shows testis-specific expression in both humans and mice, predominantly during the late-meiotic and early haploid stages of spermatogenesis[2][4]. FANK1 functions as a DNA-binding protein and is considered to be involved in transcriptional regulation of genes critical for sperm development. Knockdown of FANK1 in mice leads to impaired spermatogenesis, reduced sperm count, and increased apoptosis among spermatogenic cells, supporting its essential role in male fertility[2][4]. There is no evidence implicating FANK1 as a target for therapeutic intervention in major disease types, nor are there established drugs or biomarkers directly related to its activity in clinical practice.
