Fibrous tissue, properly termed "fibrous connective tissue," is a class of tissue comprised predominantly of collagen fibers and produced by fibroblasts[1][7][8]. It provides tensile strength, structural support, and stability to organs, joints, and the musculoskeletal system[1][7][9]. Major types include tendons (muscle to bone), ligaments (bone to bone), and fascia (muscle to muscle or wrap around organs)[1][6][7]. In disease, excessive production and accumulation of fibrous tissue leads to fibrosis—the pathological formation of scar tissue, disrupted organ function, and is implicated in conditions ranging from chronic inflammatory disease to cancer and organ failure[3][4][5]. It is not a molecular target but rather the result, substrate, or consequence of cellular and molecular processes.
