Overview

Filamentous haemagglutinin (FHA) is a large, surface-associated and secreted protein produced by the bacterium *Bordetella pertussis*, the causative agent of whooping cough. FHA functions primarily as an adhesin, facilitating bacterial attachment to host cells, and is a major virulence factor. It is also a key component in acellular pertussis vaccines.

Mechanism of action

Acellular pertussis vaccines containing FHA stimulate the production of antibodies that neutralize the adhesin, preventing bacterial attachment and colonization.
