FHA
Molecular classification

01

Overview

Filamentous hemagglutinin (FHA) is a large, rod-shaped, highly immunogenic protein produced by Bordetella species, most notably Bordetella pertussis. FHA is both surface-associated and secreted by the bacteria and plays a critical role in bacterial adherence to host cells and in virulence. It mediates attachment to ciliated respiratory epithelial cells and macrophages through several binding domains, including a heparin-binding domain, a carbohydrate-recognition domain, and an RGD motif. FHA also modulates the host immune response, contributing to immunosuppression during infection. It is a key component of acellular pertussis vaccines.
