Filamentous Temperature-Sensitive Protein Z (FtsZ)

Target
FtsZ
Molecular classification
Tubulin superfamily, GTPase
01

Overview

Filamentous temperature-sensitive protein Z (FtsZ) is a highly conserved prokaryotic protein essential for bacterial cell division. It is a functional and structural homologue to eukaryotic tubulin, polymerizing in a GTP-dependent manner to form the Z-ring, which acts as a scaffold for recruiting other proteins involved in septum formation. FtsZ is a validated antibacterial drug target, with several inhibitors being developed to disrupt its function and combat antibiotic-resistant pathogens.
