FimH is a bacterial adhesin protein located at the tip of type 1 fimbriae in Escherichia coli and other Enterobacteriaceae. It mediates the initial attachment of bacteria to host cells by specifically binding to D-mannose residues on host tissues. This interaction is crucial for colonization and infection, particularly in urinary tract infections. It consists of a lectin domain (mannose-binding) and a pilin domain, connected by a short linker. FimH exhibits catch bond behavior, where binding affinity increases under mechanical shear stress.
