Five Elements balance

Five Elements balance, or Wu Xing, is a fundamental conceptual framework in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Ayurveda (Panchamahabhuta) rather than a specific molecular target, receptor, or enzyme (Becker, 2020). This holistic system categorizes dynamic states of change into five phases—Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water—which are used to represent interconnected organ systems and physiological processes (NIH NCCIH, 2023). In traditional diagnostics, health is viewed as the maintenance of harmony among these elements, while disease results from their imbalance or the blockage of energy (Qi) within specific meridians (fsdivination, 2025). Because Wu Xing is a philosophical and systemic diagnostic model used to guide complex interventions like acupuncture and herbal poly-pharmacy, it does not map to a single gene product, protein, or biochemical pathway (Phytotherapy Research, 2025). As such, it does not meet the criteria for a therapeutic target in modern molecular pharmacology or drug discovery pipelines and cannot be modulated by conventional targeted small molecules or biologics.
