Flagellum-associated coiled-coil domain-containing protein 1 (FLACC1)

Target
FLACC1
Molecular classification
Other, Structural protein (associated with sperm flagellum; contains coiled-coil domains)

Overview

Flagellum-associated coiled-coil domain-containing protein 1 (FLACC1 or ALS2CR12) is a protein encoded by the FLACC1 gene, primarily expressed in testicular tissue and localizing to sperm flagella, specifically the principal piece region. Despite its testis-specific expression and initial association with sperm structure, knockout studies in mice have shown FLACC1 is dispensable for fertility and viability, indicating redundancy or a non-essential role in spermatogenesis. While the gene symbol ALS2CR12 references its location in a genomic region linked to juvenile amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, current evidence suggests no direct mechanistic or disease link for FLACC1 with ALS or other disorders. There are no known drug interactions or therapeutic mechanisms associated with FLACC1.
