FMO9P is officially known as flavin containing dimethylaniline monoxygenase 9, pseudogene (RP11-45J16.2). It represents a nonfunctional derivative of the FMO gene family but does not encode a functional enzyme or protein product[4]. Pseudogenes like FMO9P are often transcriptionally silent or produce RNA that may regulate related protein-coding genes by acting as microRNA decoys, producing short interfering RNAs, or modulating mRNA stability of parent genes[2][3][4]. Although some pseudogenes have demonstrable biological regulatory activities—e.g., influencing cancer progression or metabolic regulation—there is no evidence that FMO9P itself serves as a direct or validated therapeutic target. Pseudogenes can complicate genetic analyses due to sequence similarity with functional genes and may participate in noncoding RNA regulatory networks in human cells[2][3][4].
