Overview

Flavoprotein enzymes are a broad superfamily of proteins characterized by the presence of a flavin nucleotide cofactor (FMN or FAD) derived from vitamin B2 (riboflavin)[5][2]. These enzymes are mostly oxidoreductases and catalyze redox reactions vital to primary energy metabolism, biosynthesis of essential cellular components, detoxification, DNA repair, and many other crucial biological functions[1][3]. Over 90 flavoprotein genes are encoded in the human genome, and defects in their biosynthesis, mutation, or cofactor deficiency are linked to diseases including cancer, cardiovascular, and neurological disorders[3][2][1]. Due to the diversity of this group, "Flavoprotein enzyme" is not a specific molecular target, but rather denotes a functional class containing many individual therapeutic targets such as xanthine oxidase, monoamine oxidase, and others.
